KUALA LUMPUR: Former national coach Datuk Misbun Sidek hopes to see a rash of changes under the leadership of newly-elected Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president Tengku Tan Sri Mahaleel Tengku Ariff.
Misbun, who left the BAM coaching set-up in 2001 due to unhappiness over several decisions made by a few key personnels in the coaching and training committee, described Tengku Mahaleel as a brave man to take up the hotseat.
Tengku Mahaleel was the only BAM council member who showed an interest to occupy the seat vacated by his predecessor Datuk Seri Nadzmi Mohd Salleh.
After his appointment, Tengku Mahaleel promised to take the sport to greater heights.
“I’d like to congratulate Tengku Mahaleel. I’m glad that he has assumed the position. He is brave to take up the role as president and I really hope to see many changes under his leadership,” said Misbun who, however, did not elaborate on the changes.
On his current status as a “free man”, Misbun said he was enjoying himself.
“Everything is fine with me … I’m just leading an ordinary life.”
Misbun currently coaches his son Ramdan during his free time.
Ramdan did his father proud when he upset all the national players en route to becoming the national champion in Alor Star last December. Ramdan left BAM in January to join professional outfit Nusa Mahsuri.
