SOO Teck Zhi was untested as he joined a host of Malaysian shuttlers in the third round of the World Junior Championships in Bangkok yesterday.
Teck Zhi, the Asian Junior champion, defeated Luis Ramon Garrido of Mexico 21-11, 21-12 in the second round and will meet Yang Sheng Jie of Taiwan today.
Soong Joo Ven was stretched to three games by Sweden’s Felix Burestedt before winning 22-24, 21-16, 21-17 and faces Max Weissskirchen of Germany in the third round.
Lim Chi Wing made a big impact when he defeated Indonesia’s top shuttler Fikri Ihsandi Hadmadi 21-19, 21-18 to set up a third round clash with Aditya Joshi of India.
Cheam June Wei was the only Malaysian player in the boys’ singles to be shown the exit after he lost 21-17, 21-15 to Muhamad Bayu Panghistu in the second round.
Girls’ singles Goh Jin Wei had the easiest task of beating Joy Lai of Australia 21-8, 21-9 and will be up against Kim Na Young of South Korea next.
National Under-16 champion S. Kisona also had an easy 21-8, 21-9 win over Julie Finne Ipson of Denmark but faces a tough task in the third round where she will play top seed Aya Ohori of Japan today.
Ho Yen Mei, who beat Tsang Wing Chiu of Hong Kong 21-13, 21-19, also faces a third round exit as she will take on title contender Busanan Ongbumrungphan of Thailand while Lee Ying Ying, who thrashed Magdalina Lajdova of the Czech Republic 21-3, 21-12, plays Singapore’s Liang Xiaoyu.
Boys’ doubles hopefuls D. Darren Issac-Ong Yew Sin reached the second round after beating Vanmael Heriau-Loic Mittelheisser of France 24-22, 21-7 and have another easy third round clash against Carlos Cayanan-Alvin Morada of the Philippines.
Chua Keh Yeap-Amzzar Zainuddin also reached the second round with a 21-13, 21-8 win over Michael Jennings-Bongani van Bodenstein of South Africa to book a third round encounter against Anthony Jo-Low Pit Seng of Australia.
