Sukma: Goh Jin Wei and Zulfadli Zulkiffli win gold

Kuala Lumpur: The 14-year-old Goh Jin Wei of Penang shocked the Badminton community in Malaysia on Tuesday with a 20-22, 22-20, 21-15 upset against Malaysia’s second women’s singles player Yang Li Lian of Selangor in a nail biting Sukma women’s singles final.Goh Jin Wei with her family (left) and Zulfadli Zulkiffli (right)

When asked about another teen sensation Ratchanok Intanon from Thailand after the match, Jin Wei refused to be compared to Ratchanok who won her first world junior title at the age of 14 and won the world championship last year when she was 18.

“I still have a long way to go to justify comparisons with Ratchanok. I need to first win the world junior championships in order to truly compare with Ratchanok”

In the men’s singles final, former world junior champion Zulfadli Zulkiffli of Federal Territories defeated second seed Chong Yee Han of Selangor 21-12, 21-18 to defend his Sukma gold.

“I did not play at my best because my knee injury has not fully recovered yet, that really affected my games. Frankly, I was being cautious as I didn’t want to aggravate the injury,” said the 21-year-old Zulfadli.

“Nevertheless, I am satisfied with the result, this would be my second Sukma men’s singles gold medal. Thanks to the officials who made room for me on the roster even though I was not in the best physical condition.”
