Kuala Lumpur: Hendrawan, the 2000 Summer Olympics men’s singles silver medalist, and winner of the 2001 World Championships will be assisting men’s singles coach Tey Seu Bock in the BWF World Championships that will take place August 25-31 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
When speaking to reporter, Hendrawan advised that staying calm, cool and collected during a competition is critical in winning championships.
“Players may experience a broad range of emotions in varying degrees of intensity during and after a match. In Copenhagen, I will be responsible to guide Chong Wei and Wei Feng on how to handle their emotion, while Seu Bock will be handling the technical matters,” said Hendrawan.
The former world champion also shared his experience with the players on how to become a champion.
“It’s not easy to become a world champion. There were a lot of sacrifices and a lot of overcoming obstacles before I won the world championships in 2001. Chong Wei is and outstanding player, and he is both physically and mentally prepared for the tournament,” said Hendrawan.
As for the world number one Lee Chong Wei, he expressed confidence in both of his coaches.
“I can always count on Hendrawan and Seu Bock. Sometimes, Hendrawan advises me during training, he is a former world champion, it’s definitely a plus to have him on the team,” said Chong Wei.
When asked about Rashid, Chong Wei hoped Rashid and BAM could resolve their differences as soon as possible.
“Rashid has been going through a lot of things lately, this is a wonderful opportunity for him to take a break and relax, because we still need him in the Asian Games next month,” said Chong Wei.
Rashid Sidek, who had public fallout with president of Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) Tengku Mahaleel Tengku Ariff was dropped from the World Championships squad after poor performance of Malaysian men’s singles at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
