Jakarta: In a day full of upsets at the BCA Indonesia Open on Saturday, Indian shuttler Parupalli Kashyap who defeated world number one Chen Long in the quarterfinals on Friday, lost 21-12 17-21 19-21 in a draining battle to eighth seed Kento Momota which lasted an hour and 11 minutes. The last time Kashyap and Momota played each other was two years ago, and the Japanese had emerged triumphant in their previous encounter as well.
Men’s singles defending champion Jan O. Jorgensen of Denmark sailed to the Indonesia Open finals after Germany’s Marc Zwiebler was forced to retire after what appeared to be food poisoning. Third-seeded Jorgensen faced a tough fight from Zwiebler, who refused to let up and kept points tight up to 17-17 in the first set before the Danish player stepped up is effort to clinch the set 21-17. Marc had to retire from the second set when Jan Jorgensen was leading at 11-5.
Saturday was a good day for Japan’s singles player, in which other than Kento Momota, Yui Hashimoto also advanced to the women’s singles final. Yui Hashimoto won over Wang Yihan of China in the women’s semi-finals with 21-17 9-21 21-17. She will face Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon in the women’s singles final.
