Junior Purple League seeks to develop and nurture young talent

Kuala Lumpur: The Junior Purple League, a brand new badminton event in Malaysia targeted toward 13-18 year-old junior players, is set to debut in Malaysia between August and October 2015.Purple League's CEO Jack Koh (left), Malaysia’s Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin and Lee Chong Wei during the launch of Malaysia Purple League in April 2014.

Organizer of the Malaysia Purple League (MPL) has direct ownership of the Junior Purple League. 12 premier badminton clubs from the Malaysia Purple League will form teams of up to 20 players for the Junior Purple League. Each club will also be allowed to register a maximum of 40% foreign players to strengthen their line-up.

“We are very pleased to announce the launch of the Junior Purple League. The Malaysia Purple League was very successful in all manner, which ultimately led us to launch the Junior Purple League as an additional outlet for the younger talents to gain early exposure to high level of badminton competition,” said Dato’ Jack Koh, CEO of Purple League (M) Sdn Bhd.

The round-robin competition format is used for teams in the junior league, where each club will play every other club in the league. It would be on a mixed team format comprising 5 matches: Men’s singles, Women’s singles, Men’s doubles, Women’s doubles and Mixed doubles. Every match in a tie shall be played to the best of 5 games to 11 points.

The top three teams of the league, ranked according to the highest aggregate of games won against games lost, will share the prize money pool of RM175, 000 as follows:

Champion RM 100,000
Runner Up RM 50,000
Third RM 25,000
