Ho Chi Minh City: Revenge proved sweet for Malaysia’s Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying and now they have No. 6 seeds Andrei Adistia/Vita Marissa in their sights at the Vietnam Open.
The Indonesian duo of Praveen Jordan and Debby Susanto was stretched to three sets before emerging victorious against Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying in the nail-biting mixed doubles final at SEA Games in June 2015. However, the Malaysians turned the tables in the mixed doubles second round at Vietnam Open on Thursday, forging to a 21-16, 21-12 victory in just 34 minutes with a majestic exhibition. The win earned Chan/Goh a quarter-final clash with No. 6 seeds Andrei Adistia/Vita Marissa, who earlier dispatched Wang Sijie/Ou Dongni of China in three-set.
In men’s singles, Chong Wei Feng overcame a one set deficit in a hard fought match to beat local favorite Nguyen Tien Minh 21-15, 9-21, 21-14. Chong will take on Japanese Kenta Nishimoto on Friday.
Tommy Sugiarto lived up to his No. 1 seed billing on Thursday, taking out fellow Indonesian Wisnu Yuli Prasetyo 21-9, 21-16 to book his passage to the men’s singles quarter-finals. Sugiarto will take on his Indonesian senior Alamsyah Yunus for a semi-final berth.
Meanwhile, No. 3 seeds Amelia Alicia Anscelly/Soong Fie Cho suffered a second-round upset loss by the hands of unseeded Chen Hsiao Huan/Huang Mei Ching of Taiwan, losing 15- 21, 13-21.
Malaysia’s diamond pair, Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong was shining bright like a in the men’s doubles second round on Thursday. Koo/Tan battled back to take a marathon first set 25-23 from Taiwanese Lin Chia Yu/Wu Hsiao-Lin. The Malaysians performed admirably in the second set before eventually fighting off a resilient display from Lin/Wu to seal the second set 21-16. Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong are braced for tougher tests in the quarter-finals, where they will play Indonesians Gideon Markus Fernaldi/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo who were the runners-up at Chinese Taipei Open in July.
Mindful that Gideon Markus Fernaldi/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo had defeated reigning world champions Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan in two sets en route to the Chinese Taipei Open final.
