The eighth-seeded Malaysians advanced to the quarter-finals with a 21-15, 14-21, 21-14 win over Japan’s Miyuki Maeda-Satoko Suetsuna yesterday to set up a match against third seeds and Olympic champions Yang Wei-Zhang Jiewen of China.

Yang Wei-Jiewen were reunited for the World Championships after months of separation.

Yang Wei had partnered Zhao Tingting but the latter’s performance was far from satisfactory. They were beaten by Indonesians Vita Marissa-Lilyana Natsir in the China Masters in Chengdu in July and Jiewen was brought back to partner Yang Wei.

While admitting they will face an uphill task against the Chinese, Pei Tty-Eei Hui are quietly optimistic of putting up a fight.

The Malaysians were losers to the Chinese in the semi-finals of the All-England early this year.

“We gave them a fight the last time and we hope to go one better this time and play in the semi-finals of the World Championships,” said Pei Tty.

“We used to be more defensive and take a play safe approach but our coach (Cheah Soon Kit) wants us to attack more.”

In their debut in the championships in Birmingham in 2003, Pei Tty-Eei Hui reached the second round. They were quarter-finalists in Anaheim in 2005 and in Madrid last year.
