Kuala Lumpur: World No. 183 women’s singles player Soniia Cheah from Malaysia won her first international title Belgian International Challenge Badminton Championship in Leuven, Belgium, on Saturday.
The injury-plagued 23-year-old shuttler suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in August of 2013, and had since went through a difficult road to recovery. There was an infection on her wound after her first surgery, and it wasn’t until after her fourth surgery that the infection was cleared.
On Saturday, Cheah showed great resilience to fight back from a set down to beat No. 8 seed Sofie Holmboe Dahl of Denmark 21-11, 16-21 and 21-16 in an enthralling women’s singles final.
After their victory in Belgium, Cheah is heading to Polish International Challenge to be held from Sept 22-25.
In men’s singles final, No. 5 seed Lucas Corvee of France defeated Sourabh Varma of India 21-19, 21-19 to win the men’s crown.
