Glasgow: The Malaysian started the finals day of the Scottish Open by chasing women’s doubles, men’s singles and mixed doubles titles on Sunday.
With the first match on finals day at the Scottish Open being all-Malaysian affairs, Lim Yin Loo/Yap Cheng Wen came up triumphant in the women’s doubles final by outplaying compatriots Amelia Alicia Anscelly/Teoh Mei Xing 21-17, 21-13 in 38 minutes. The Scottish Open was Lim Yin Loo/Yap Cheng Wen’s second title of the year after they took home the Indonesia International Challenge that was held in Semarang, Indonesia early November.
Despite gritting his teeth to fight back after trailing 3-10 and was able to force deuce at 20-20, No. 15 seed Soong Joo Ven couldn’t figure out a way to break second seed Anders Antonsen of Denmark when it matters the most to fall 20-22 to the Dane in the first set. Antonsen who played in the longest match of the tournament in the semi-final on Saturday before defeating Sweden’s Henri Hurskainen 21-19, 14-21, 21-19 in 75 minutes, continued his strong run in the second set to defeat Soong 21-14 and to take the men’s champion back to Denmark after his teammate Hans-Kristian Vittinghus won it last year.
Qualifiers World No. 229 Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Lai Jemie scored the biggest upset of the day by knocking out top seeds Pranaav Jerry Chopra/Reddy N. Sikki 13-21, 21-18, 21-16 and nicked their second international title in one month after winning the Malaysia International Challenge two weeks ago.
Goh/Lai was trying to adapt to Chopra/Sikki’s playing style in the first set before surrendering 13-21. The second set was neck-and-neck and a after a late surge by the Malaysian pair allowed them to force a decider.
The unseeded Goh/Lai then finished the third set in stunning fashion when they came back from 12-16 deficits, reeling off 9 straight points to show the crowd a seismic upset by beating the top seeds and clinched their first mixed doubles title in Scotland.
