Taipei: Taiwan’s Tai Tzu Ying is now officially the best women’s singles player on the planet.
In the latest world rankings published Thursday by Badminton World Federation (BWF), the 22-year-old Taiwanese player was listed as No. 1 women’s singles player with 78,651 points, followed by Olympic gold medalist Carolina Marin of Spain with 77,750 points.
Her rise to the top spot in the rankings fittingly came after she defeated Carolina Marin, and Olympic silver medalist P.V. Sindhu of India en route to clinch her second Hong Kong Superseries title last Sunday. She was ranked World No. 3 prior to her victory in Hong Kong. She also became the first Taiwanese women’s singles player to ever achieve that World No. 1 status.
Another big mover in the women’s singles top 10 was P.V. Sindhu, climbing 2 spots to World No. 7.
In men’s singles, Lee Chong Wei, Chen Long, Jan Jorgensen, Viktor Axelsen, and Lin Dan rounded up the top 5.
Malaysian duo of Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong have occupied the crest of men’s doubles rankings since November 10th. However, their supremacy seems to be in danger, with Denmark’s Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen closing in with just 463 points behind.
Misaki Matsutomo/Ayaka Takahashi and Ko Sung Hyun/Kim Ha Na remained as World No. 1 in women’s doubles and mixed doubles respectively.
