China sweeps four titles at Macau

China proved it was the world's badminton powerhouse after a nearly-cleansweep of four titles at the US$120,000, with Malaysia taking one in the men's doubles event.

Indonesia's sixth seed Taufik Hidayat — in his third final this year — failed to grab what would have been his first title in the past six months. His last victory was at the Asian Continental Championships in April.

Taufik bowed out to fifth seed Chen Jin of China 21-19, 17-21, 18-21 in the final match. His defeat extended Chen's winning head-to-head record to 2-1.

The 26-year-old Olympic champion previously reached the final matches at the Japan Open and Taipei Open but failed to bring home the crown.

China grabbed three other titles from women's singles, women's doubles and mixed doubles.

Second seed Xie Xinfang had a convincing victory over unseeded Jae Youn Jun of South Korea 21-10, 21-10.

In the women's doubles, second seeds Gao Ling and Huang Sui were easily triumphant against sixth seeds Lee Kyung Won and Lee Hyo Jung 21-15, 21-7.

The Koreans shockingly sent out top seeds Zhang Yawen and Wei Yili of China in the quarterfinals.

China also won the mixed doubles title with top seeds Xie Zhongbo and Zhang Yiwen ousted Chieh Min Fang and Wen Hsing Cheng of China Taipei 21-14, 21-16.

Malaysia had ensured a title after setting an all-Malaysian men's doubles final. Second seeds Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong — who have been under the tight supervision of coach Rexy Mainaky due to their poor performance in international events recently — had to work hard to tame old hands Choong Tan Fook and Lee Wan Wah before winning 21-18, 17-21, 23-21. — JP
