KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 19 (Bernama) — Malaysia emerged the overall champion in badminton at the 14th Asean University Games (AUG’08), winning all seven gold at stake.
The runners-up were Indonesia with five silver and three bronze while Thailand came in third with five bronze.
The host nation stormed ahead when they picked five more gold, two silver and two bronze medals at the Cheras Badminton Stadium here Friday.
Malaysia took an early control on the opening day on Sunday by winning two gold in the men’s and women’s team events.
In today’s matches, Malaysia won the gold in men’s doubles through Mohd Razif Ab Latif and Tan Wee Kiong, mixed doubles (Tan Wee Kiong and Woon Khe Wei) and men’s singles (Mohamad Arif Ab Latif).
The other two gold were from women’s singles (Julia Wong) and women’s doubles (Amelia Alicia Anscelly and Woon Khe Wei).
The two silver were lifted by Hoon Thien How and Ng Hui Lin (mixed doubles) and Goh Liu Ying and Ng Hui Lin (women’s doubles) while Lydia Cheah (women’s singles) and Chong Wei Feng (men’s singles) gave the two bronze.
Delighted national team manager Nor Azli Abdul Aziz said the team had achieved more than the target three gold with flying colours.
“We resolve to maintain our peak performance. This is a truly historic results for the country and badminton.
“I hope some of the shuttlers, who will be taking part in the Malaysian Open next January, will maintain their rhythm.
“They are talented young players with bright future ahead of them,” he told Bernama.
