JAKARTA – Following his runner-up finish at the 2025 Indonesia Open, Taiwanese men’s singles ace Chou Tien-chen took the opportunity to engage in a special training session with legendary Indonesian shuttler Hariyanto Arbi.

The friendly session was held at the Flypower headquarters in Kebayoran Lama, Jakarta, on Monday (June 9). Known for his powerful smashes and sharp footwork, Chou sought advice from the former world No. 1 on improving his offensive game.
“It was a casual practice. Chou asked about proper smash techniques, just like he usually does. We’ve known each other for a while, so it was more of a relaxed catch-up while hitting together,” said Hariyanto Arbi.
The duo’s meet-up started with a post-final dinner after the Indonesia Open, where Chou finished second after falling to Denmark’s Anders Antonsen in straight sets (20-22, 14-21). They were joined by Victo Wibowo, a former Indonesian coach now based in Taiwan, and Victoria Kao, a longtime team liaison for Chou.
“We’re old friends from our days in the Djarum Superliga,” Hariyanto added.
The camaraderie was later shared on social media, with Hariyanto posting warm photos of the group enjoying time both on and off the court.
For context, Hariyanto Arbi, famously known as the “100-Watt Smash King,” was one of Indonesia’s top badminton players in the 1990s. He clinched prestigious titles including back-to-back All England crowns (1993, 1994), the 1995 World Championship, and helped Indonesia secure the Thomas Cup in 1994, 1996, 1998, and 2000. He held the world No. 1 ranking in 1995.
Meanwhile, Chou Tien-chen, currently one of Taiwan’s most decorated players, continues to display top-level form in the BWF World Tour. Although he couldn’t secure the title at the Indonesia Open this year, his dedication to learning from legends like Hariyanto Arbi showcases his drive to improve.
