Jakarta: Indonesian badminton legend Hendra Setiawan has announced his retirement from professional badminton, with the Indonesia Masters 2025 set to be the final tournament of his illustrious career.
Setiawan shared the news through his social media accounts, sparking an outpouring of support and best wishes from fellow athletes and badminton fans worldwide.
“After 35 years in the world of badminton, I feel it is the right time to decide to end my career as a professional athlete,” Setiawan wrote. “The Indonesia Masters 2025 will be my final tournament. I am grateful to God for allowing me to play this far and for achieving all my dreams in badminton.”
Setiawan, a men’s doubles specialist, also expressed heartfelt gratitude to his partners, including the late Markis Kido and Mohammad Ahsan.
“Thank you to all my partners, especially the late Kido and Ahsan, who fought alongside me. Thanks also to PBSI, my club Jaya Raya, all sponsors, especially Victor and Waroeng Steak & Shake, as well as all the coaches and men’s doubles teammates,” Setiawan added.
He didn’t forget to thank his fans and family, who have been his pillars of support throughout his career.
“Thank you to all the fans who have supported me from the beginning until now. And a special thanks to my family, especially my wife, who has always supported me through everything,” he said. “See you all at the Indonesia Masters 2025.”
Setiawan’s announcement was met with widespread well-wishes from fellow players, including Marcus Fernaldi Gideon.
“Happy retirement, Ko! Wishing you success in whatever lies ahead, and don’t forget to keep playing badminton for fun!” Gideon wrote in the comments.
Danish player Anders Skaarup Rasmussen, currently ranked World No. 3 in men’s doubles, called Hendra a legend and credited him for being a source of inspiration.
“Happy retirement, legend. It’s always been a joy to learn from your game and watch how effortless you made badminton look. Enjoy this time with your family and friends,” Rasmussen said.
Hendra Setiawan leaves behind a legacy that spans over three decades. Among his many accolades is the men’s doubles gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, which he won alongside Markis Kido. His achievements, including numerous World Championship titles and All England victories, have cemented his status as one of badminton’s all-time greats.
As he prepares for his final appearance at the Indonesia Masters 2025, the badminton world will come together to celebrate the incredible career of a true legend.
