New Delhi: In the 2024 India Open women’s singles final, Taiwan’s world no. 3 Tai Tzu Ying defeated China’s world no. 2 Chen Yufei in straight sets, wrapping up the second week of the new season with a perfect victory. Tai, who expressed her gratitude on social media, received warm congratulations from her rival and good friend, Thailand’s world no. 13 Ratchanok Intanon.

After losing to South Korea’s reigning champion An Se-young in the final of the first tournament of the 2024 season at the Malaysia Open, Tai Tzu Ying reached the final again for the second consecutive week in the India Open. This time, Tai secured victory against Chen Yufei with scores of 21-16 and 21-12, claiming her first title of the season and marking her maiden victory in India.
Tai Tzu Ying expressed her appreciation on Instagram and Facebook after the match, stating, “Perfectly ending this second week of competition, thanks to my team,” and extending gratitude to all her fans. Ratchanok Intanon left a heartwarming comment under Tai’s Instagram post, saying, “Congratulations, Strong Tai!”

This victory not only secured her first title of the season but also marked her first-ever triumph in India. Moreover, she equaled two significant records previously held by South Korea’s An Se-young and Chen Yufei.
According to Indian badminton journalist Mohit Shah, Tai Tzu Ying has now accumulated 9 titles in her career in the BWF Super 750 and BWF Super 1000 events, tying with South Korea’s An Se-Young for the most in both Super 750 and Super 1000. In the Super 750 Series events alone, Tai has won 5 titles, equaling the record held by Chen Yufei.
Tai Tzu-ying’s career now boasts a total of 17 titles in the BWF World Tour, surpassing the 16 titles held by Japan’s former world No. 1 Akane Yamaguchi, but trailing An Se Young’s 20 titles. Mohit Shah also noted that Tai’s 32nd career singles title places her just one title behind the men’s singles legend Lin Dan of China, who holds a total of 33 titles. However, both Tai and Lin are considerably behind Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei, who has earned a record 57 titles in his career. However, Tai is the only female singles player with over 30 titles.
In the women’s doubles final, Mayu Matsumoto/Wakana Nagahara defeated Zhang Shu Xian/Zheng Yu of China 21-12, 21-13 for the India Open title.
