Vantaa: The Arctic Badminton Open has turned into a thrilling showcase of talent, especially for the Malaysian contingent. Among them, the standout performer, Lee Zii Jia, the world’s 14th ranked men’s singles player, is set for a face-off against Denmark’s No. 3 seed, Anders Antonsen, in Saturday’s semi-finals.
Another Malaysian sensation, Ng Tze Yong, who sits at World No. 19, also secured a place in the semis, fueling hopes among fans for an all-Malaysian final. On the doubles front, the country’s pride was upheld by Man Wei Chong/Tee Kai Wun, the World No. 23 pair, and mixed doubles duo Chen Tang Jie/Toh Ee Wei, currently ranked World No. 9.
The quarter-final clash saw Lee Zii Jia and Leong Jun Hao engaging in a tight contest. While Lee clinched the first game 21-16, Leong made a comeback with a 21-19 win in the second. Unfortunately, in the pivotal third set, an unexpected turn of events saw Leong retire due to a leg injury, with Lee leading 11-7. This victory marked Lee’s third triumph over Leong, echoing their recent face-off at the Australian Super 500 earlier this year.
Despite Lee’s commendable track record this year, with semi-final appearances at tournaments including the All England and Australian Open Super 500, he is yet to claim a final spot in 2023. His last notable success was a second-place finish at the Danish Super 750 in October of the previous year.
Antonsen, Lee’s upcoming adversary, demonstrated his resilience by overcoming Japan’s Watanabe Koki in a grueling 3-set match 21-9, 22-24, 21-14.
Ng Tze Yong’s rise to the semis was marked by a definitive win over World No. 12 Lu Guangzu, giving him his first victory in their third head-to-head encounter. Interestingly, it’s Ng’s fourth time reaching the World Tour semi-finals since his senior debut in 2019, making him a promising contender in future championships.
In doubles action, Chen Tang Jie/Toh Ee Wei pulled off an upset to beat Thailand’s former world champions Dechapol Puavaranukroh/Sapsiree Taerattanachai 21-14, 21-17 in the quarterfinals of the Arctic Badminton Super 500, taking one step closer to winning their third crown this year.
In the semi-finals, Chen/Toh’s opponents will be China’s No. 4 seeds Jiang Zhenbang/Wei Yaxin.
The men’s doubles category saw Man Wei Chong/Tee Kai Wun successfully defeated Indonesia’s former Asian champions Pramudya Kusumawardana/Yeremia Erich Yoche Yacob Rambitan 22-20, 21-18 in the quarterfinals, winning the first meeting between the two sides.
Man/Tee will face Rasmus Kjær/Frederik Søgaard of Denmark on Saturday.
