Saina Nehwal slipped a place to No.8 and is now only a spot ahead of World No.9 Pusarla Venkata Sindhu, who despite her first round exit from All-England Open Badminton Championships last week, still retained the position.

Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei regains All-England Open Crown (pic)

Despite an ankle problem, Lee Chong Wei produced one of his finest performances to regain the All-England Open title by beating Chen Long from China in an impressively emphatic straight games win in Birmingham on Sunday.

The world number one from Malaysia beat the titleholder from China 21-13, 21-18 – revenge for his loss to Chen in the final last year.

The variety of the 31-year-old's game was often mesmerising, and his focus was steely enough to resist determined second-game fight-backs by Chen from 4-10 to 9-10 and from 13-18 to 17-18 and to within the width of the net tape of getting to 18-all.

World number one Lee Chong Wei earned himself a revenge attempt with All-England champion Chen Long after escaping from close defeat to achieve a breathtaking victory.

BIRMINGHAM, United Kingdom: World number one Lee Chong Wei earned himself a revenge attempt with All-England champion Chen Long after escaping from close defeat to achieve a breathtaking victory.

The Malaysian did that with a 14-21, 21-19, 21-15 win over Son Wan Ho, the in-form world number 11 from Korea, after being close to the exit at a game down and 15-17 and 17-18 down in the second.

In those difficult moments, Lee played his most controlled badminton, either deep to the back-line or tight to the net, and picked his moments perceptively to apply the sudden moments of pressure which took him to his sixth successive All-England Open final.

Son, by contrast, tended to over-press in the crises after playing a superb match in which he took advantage of Lee's error-tinged first game and also pushed on to an early four-point lead in the final game.

BIRMINGHAM: World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei huffed and puffed his way past South Korea’s Son Wan-ho to check into the final of the All-England badminton championships.

Two-time winner Chong Wei, who has enjoyed an easy run so far, found the 25-year-old military man a sturdy wall as he slogged for a 14-21, 21-19, 21-15 win in the semi-finals at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham on Saturday.

Despite taking a 5-1 lead in the first game, Chong Wei was caught off-guard by Wan-ho’s steely determination as the Korean came back strongly to win it.

The two-time Olympic silver medallist then toyed with the prospect of a surprise – and painful exit – when Wan-ho led 17-15 in the second game.

Being the fighter that he is, Chong Wei managed to muster enough firepower in reserves to force a deciding rubber by the skin of his teeth.

He then stormed ahead to seal his place in his sixth straight All-England final after 71 minutes.

All-England: No mercy for Wei Feng (pic)

BIRMINGHAM: There was no holding back indeed as world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei whipped Chong Wei Feng in the second round of the All-England on Thursday.

Chong Wei, who is bidding for his third All-England crown, had previously warned that he will not hold back against training partner Wei Feng.

And he certainly kept his word with a comprehensive 21-6, 21-12 win to make the quarter-finals.

“I expected it to be really tough against Chong Wei and I prepared myself for it … but I didn’t expect it to turn out so bad,” said Wei Feng.

The 31-year-old Chong Wei will now meet exciting Japanese youngster Kento Momota in the last eight.

Tame end for Hoon and Tan (pic)

BIRMINGHAM: It was tame finish in the end for Hoon Thien How-Tan Wee Kiong as they crashed out in the quarter-finals of the All-England.

Fifth seeds Thien How-Wee Kiong let themselves down as they failed to stem the challenge of Indonesians Gideon Markis Fernaldi-Markis Kido, losing 18-21, 12-21 on Friday.

The Malaysian world No.7 pair started the match on equal footing with the French Open champions and were neck-and-neck in the first game.

Gideon-Markis however pulled away at 16-16 as they provided a stronger finish to take the first game.

Danish pair hungry for more after scalping defending champs (pic)

BIRMINGHAM: Denmark has always been a top men’s doubles nation, with Jens Eriksen-Martin Luudgaard Hansen the more notable stars of the modern game.

The now retired Eriksen-Hansen’s most notable successes are their All-England triumphs in 2004 and 2006. In more recent times, there have been Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen, who have consistently challenged for honours at the highest level.a

All England Open: British stars set to feature in Birmingham (pic)

Britain’s leading contenders will be in action when the first round of the All England Open Championships begins in Birmingham on Wednesday.

Chris Adcock features in the mixed doubles with wife Gabby White, and in the men’s doubles with Andy Ellis.

Adcock and White reached a career-high fifth in the world rankings when they won the Hong Kong Open last November.

World number one and top seed Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia will bid for his third All-England title in the men’s singles.

Last year’s winner Chen Long of China defends the crown he won in 2013 at Lee’s expense.

Nielsen-Pedersen hoping for better luck this time (pic)

BIRMINGHAM: World No. 4 mixed doubles pair Joachim Fischer Nielsen-Christinna Pedersen of Denmark are the in-form pair right now.

They won the Superseries Finals in Kuala Lumpur last year before returning to Malaysia in January, where they made the final of the Malaysian Open – losing to China’s Xu Chen-Ma Jin.

Nevertheless, Nielsen-Pedersen have consistently beaten the top Chinese pairs and Indonesia’s reigning world champions Tontowi Ahmad-Liliyana Natsir.

But the All-England is one tournament where the Danes have generally never done well – losing in the first round last year and only making the quarter-finals in 2011 and 2012.
