Kuala Lumpur: After losing to China’s top-seed He Bing Jiao in the semi-finals of the Asian Junior Championships in Bangkok last year, World Junior Champion Goh Jin Wei hoped to capitalize on her experience of playing in several huge tournaments such as the Asia Team Championships, Uber Cup Finals and her first Super Series event – the Australia Open, and to do well in this year’s Asian Junior Championships which starts in Bangkok next week.
PETALING JAYA: Shuttler Goh Yea Ching was supposed to deliver two points – in the mixed doubles and girls’ doubles – against host Taiwan in the mixed team quarter-finals of the Asian Junior Championships.
But all she could do was win a point in the mixed doubles with Tan Jinn Hwa. It wasn’t enough to save Malaysia from losing 3-2 to Taiwan.
Malaysia began the day on a high, with Yea Ching-Jinn Hwa downing Lee Chia-hsin-Lee Chia-han 18-21, 21-19, 14-21.
Although Taiwan drew level when Lai Yu-hua beat Cheam June Wei 19-21, 22-20, 21-16 in the boys’ singles, Malaysia regained the lead through Goh Sze Fei-Chen Jia Huo, who fought brilliantly to beat Po Li-wei-Yang Ming-tse 21-17, 21-17 in the boys’ doubles.

KUALA LUMPUR: Youngster Cheam June Wei led Malaysia to a good start in the opening day of the Asian Junior Championships in Taiwan.
Malaysia, as expected, defeated unheralded Sri Lanka 5-0 in their Group D tie on Sunday but their real challenge – against China – awaits them on Monday.
June Wei, who is determined to come good in his second Asian junior meet, defeated Mahen Anjana Samaranayake 21-15, 21-11 to contribute one point.
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia have an amazing record of producing world-class boys’ doubles badminton pairs at the junior level.
They have won seven of the 15 editions of the World Junior Championships from 1992-2013 and four in the Asian Junior Championships since it began in 1997.
However, over the past couple of years, our national shuttlers have suffered a slump.
Nelson Heg Wei Keat-Teo Ee Yi were the last Malaysians to win the boys’ doubles title at the junior level – triumphing at the 2011 World Junior Championships in Taiwan.
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia may end up with the smallest number of entries for the badminton competition in the Youth Olympic Games this year if they do not start sending their juniors out in the next three months.
Only boys’ singles shuttler Cheam June Wei is in the running for a spot based on his standing in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) junior rankings.
