All-England: It’s over to you again, Chong Wei (pic)

BIRMINGHAM: If the results of the recent German Open are anything to go by, Malaysia will once again rely on world No.1 Lee Chong Wei for the All-England which starts on Tuesday.

In Germany, Malaysia’s best bet for a win, world No. 8 Hoon Thien How-Tan Wee Kiong failed to live up to their own high standards as they were sent packing in the semi-finals by Japan’s Takeshi Kamura-Keigo Sonoda.All Malaysian eyes will be on World No.1 Lee Chong Wei again to deliver at the All-England badminton championships starting on Tuesday.

Malaysian Open champions Goh V Shem-Lim Khim Wah were also a letdown, crashing out in the quarter-finals to Japanese Hiroyuki Endo-Kenichi Hayakawa.

Japan win big at German Open

BIRMINGHAM: Japan were the big winners of the German Open with women’s singles shuttler Sayaka Takahashi pulling off the biggest upset.

Sayaka who is currently the top-ranked Japanese woman at No. 13 in the world, proved her mettle as as she dumped top seed and world No. 5 Sung Ji-hyun of South Korea for the title in Mulheim.

Sayaka won the closely contested final 21-17, 8-21, 21-12 in 53 minutes.

Women’s doubles pair Misaki Matsutomo-Ayaka Takahashi also lived up to their top billing as they overcame the challenge of Jung Kyung-eun-Kim Ha-na.

Thien How-Wee Kiong make it to German Open semis (pic)

PETALING JAYA: World No. 8 Hoon Thien How-Tan Wee Kiong are the last men standing after Malaysia’s challenge was cut down in the quarter-finals of the German Open on Friday.

Thien How-Wee Kiong who are the tournament’s second seeds, scored an impressive win as they came from behind to down South Korea’s Ko Sung-hyun-Shin Baek-cheol 18-21, 21-16, 22-20 to make the semi-finals.Hoon Thien How and Tan Wee Kiong in a file photo. The pair made it to the German Open semi-finals after beating South Korea’s Ko Sung-hyun-Shin Baek-cheol 18-21, 21-16, 22-20.

The Koreans who are the only active pair in action following Lee Yong-dae and Kim Ki-jung’s suspension by the Badminton World Federation, took a close first game 21-18.

However, Thien How-Wee Kiong, who have a good track record taking on Korean pairs, levelled the match by taking the second game 21-16.

Yet, the Malaysians, who are now the top pair in the country following Koo Kien Keat’s resignation from the BA of Malaysia (BAM), nearly blew it in the deciding rubber as they allowed Sung-hyun-Baek-cheol to hold match point at 20-19 despite initially leading 19-15.

Three pairs make it to German Open quarters (pic)

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian Open champions Goh V Shem-Lim Khim Wah led the way as three doubles pairs booked their spots in the quarter-finals of the German Open in Mulheim.

 

 

On Thursday, V Shem-Khim Wah cut it close as they battled to a nail-biting win over home favourites Michael Fuchs-Johannes Schoettler 21-18, 16-21, 21-19 in the second round.Lim Khim Wah (right) and Goh V Shem in a file photo. The pair advanced to the last eight of the German Open after defeating Michael Fuchs-Johannes Schoettler 21-18, 16-21, 21-19.

 

 

The seventh-seeded pair will go on to meet top seeds Hiroyuki Endo-Kenichi Hayakawa of Japan in the quarter-finals.

 

 

The Japanese duo, who are currently ranked third in the world but are still seeking their first title since the Australian Open in 2010, brushed aside Belgium’s Mattijs Dierickx-Freek Golinski, 21-7, 21-14.

 

 

“Despite the score, I thought we played pretty well against the Germans,” said V Shem.

Malaysians off to flying start in German Open (pic)

PETALING JAYA: Even the luggage delay could not derail singles shuttler Liew Daren and men’s doubles pair Goh V Shem-Lim Khim Wah from making superb starts at the German Open in Mulheim.

Daren and V Shem-Khim Wah arrived in Germany on Sunday but their baggage only arrived on Monday night.Goh V Shem (left) and Lim Khim Wah in a file photo. They disposed of Hong Kong’s Chan Yun Lung-Lee Chun Hei 22-20, 23-21 in the first round of the German Open.

But it didn’t matter as world No. 38 Daren, in particular, set out to prove a point following a disappointing first-round loss in the Malaysian Open last month.

Luggage delay does not dampen Malaysia’s hopes (pic)

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s challenge at the German Open got off to the worst possible start when five of their shuttlers’ equipment and luggage arrived 24 hours late in Mulheim.

Men’s singles shuttler Liew Daren and the men’s doubles pairs of Hoon Thien How-Tan Wee Kiong and Goh V Shem-Lim Khim Wah arrived in Mulheim on Sunday night. But the quintet discovered that their luggage and racquets failed to arrive on the same flight. Liew Daren in a file photo. “We arrived on Sunday but we were unable to train because we had no luggage or equipment. It was pure bad luck,” lamented Daren.

“Fortunately, the luggage arrived last night (Monday night) and we managed to get a feel of the court,” added Daren who went into action against France’s Thomas Rouxel in the first round last night.
