India’s Arvind Bhat clinches German Open title (pic)

Arvind Bhat struck the form of his life at the age of 34 to win his first ever Grand Prix crown at the RWE-Sporthalle, upsetting 12th seeded Vittinghus 24-22, 19-21, 21-11 in exactly an hour.

Seasoned campaigner Arvind Bhat reached a new high in his badminton career when he defeated Danish Hans-Kristian Vittinghus to clinch the men's singles title of the $120,000 German Open Grand Prix Gold here Sunday.

The Indian veteran struck the form of his life at the age of 34 to win his first ever Grand Prix crown at the RWE-Sporthalle, upsetting 12th seeded Vittinghus 24-22, 19-21, 21-11 in exactly an hour.

Apart from the first round, the two-time former national champion has beaten a higher ranked player in every match.

Arvind enters men’s singles quarterfinals of German Open (pic)

MULHEIM: Arvind Bhat continued his impressive run to enter the men's singles quarterfinals of the USD 120,000 German Open Grand Prix Gold after posting a straight-game victory over Daren Liew of Malaysia, on Thursday.

However, it was curtains for Anand Pawar in another men's singles third round match as the World No. 34 Indian went down to Tien Chen Chou of Chinese Taipei 14-21 11-21 in just half-an-hour.

Former national champion Bhat, ranked 82nd, who yesterday stunned World No. 10 Yun Hu, had an easy outing today.

V Shem more confident going to Europe this year (pic)

PETALING JAYA: A sensational outing in the Malaysian Open has given men’s doubles shuttler Goh V Shem extra motivation to erase his painful memories of Europe.

V Shem will be leaving with Lim Khim Wah for Mulheim on Saturday for the German Open Grand Prix Gold which is from Feb 25-March 2. The reigning Malaysian Open champions will also take part in the All-England from March 4-9 in Birmingham.

Last year, V Shem lost his cool when his service was faulted five times en route to losing in the second round to hosts Ingo Kindervater-Johannes Schoettler in the German Open.

Khe Wei banking on German touch (pic)

KUALA LUMPUR: Women’s doubles shuttler Woon Khe Wei is banking on the German touch to do wonders for her in the back-to-back German Open Grand Prix Gold and All-England tournaments.

Khe Wei, who came out of an ankle injury last year, has been depending on the faithful service of National Sports Institute (NSI) physiotherapist Sandra Fiedler from Germany to maintain her condition ahead of the two big events in Europe.

The 23-year-old Khe Wei will be partnering Vivian Hoo in the German Open Grand Prix Gold starting on Wednesday and the All-England in Birmingham from March 4-9.

European stints crucial for Daren’s Thomas Cup berth (pic)

KUALA LUMPUR: A lot is at stake for singles shuttler Liew Daren when he takes part in the back-to-back German Open Grand Prix Gold in Mulheim from Feb 25-March 2 and the All-England from March 4-9 in Birmingham.

A good showing in these Europe tournaments will strengthen his position as one of the members of the team for the Thomas Cup Finals in May in New Delhi. It will restore his self-confidence and it will also stop his world ranking from slipping further.

Based on the draw for the German Open released on Tuesday and in the absence of players from China in the tournament, world No. 36 Daren has a good chance to redeem himself.

Daren, who is the only Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) singles player going for the GP Gold, has been drawn in the same quarter as third-seed Hu Yun of Hong Kong and 11th seed Rajiv Ouseph of England.
