Lucknow: Two-time winner Saina Nehwal and defending champion Parupalli Kashyap made a positive start to their campaign at the Syed Modi International badminton tournament, reaching the pre-quarterfinals of the women's and men's singles competition respectively.

Saina was in complete control throughout the match and won seven points on the trot in both games to force her Swedish opponent into submission.

Saina can end title drought at India GP Gold (pic)

India's number one badminton player Saina Nehwal has been awarded a relatively easy draw in the USD 120,000 India Grand Prix Gold tournament starting on Tuesday.

This is top seed Saina's best chance to start the New Year with a title, given the relatively easy draw. After retiring at match-point from the first round here last season, the World No.8 could come out on top in the field dominated with local players.
