Sourabh Verma loses in final of Malaysia Grand Prix Gold (pic)

Sourabh Varma's spectacular run was stopped by a heart-shattering loss in the final of the Yonex-Sunrise Malaysia Grand Prix Gold Badminton at the Stadium Perbandaran Pasir Gudang in Johor Bahru, Malaysia on Sunday.

It was so near yet so far for Varma, who lost a close men's singles final against Simon Santoso. The 15th seeded Indonesian rallied back strongly to halt the giant-killing run of Varma with a 15-21, 21-16, 21-19 win in a match which lasted for 69 minutes.

Soo Teck Zhi is the flame of hope for Malaysia’s singles department (pic)

PASIR GUDANG: 19-year-old Soo Teck Zhi – the former Asian Junior champion, upset professional player Mohd Arif Abdul Latif, 21-12, 21-15, with a lot of aggressive shots, to reach the men’s singles quarter-finals in the Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold.

Yesterday, Arif was the one who created an upset by beatting top seed Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk of Thailand.

Teck Zhi will face former world No. 3 Simon Santoso of Indonesia on the next round.

World-class field on show for NZ Open (pic)

Two former world No1 badminton players are in the field for next month's New Zealand Open at North Shore Events Centre.

Throw in a former world No3 and the quality of the field will be just about the best seen in the country.

Korea's Lee Hyun-Il was the game's top-ranked male player midway through the 2000s. He was beaten in the semifinals at the 2008 Olympics and lost the bronze medal playoff in London two years ago.

Indonesian Simon Santoso got as high as No3 on the ranking list. The 29-year-old has a string of international titles to his name.
