Jakarta: Fresh from his victory against reigning World Champion Kento Momota of Japan in the Asian Games round of 16, Anthony Sinisuka Ginting continued his giant-killing spree to stun former World No. 1 and Rio Olympic Champion Chen Long in the quarter-finals on Sunday.
The 21-year-old Ginting beat Chen Long 21-19, 21-11 to sail through to the semis, and will take on Taiwan’s Chou Tien Chen on Monday. Chou on the other hand, defeated Angus Ng Ka Long of Hong Kong 21-18, 21-18.
“I don’t want to think too much about tomorrow’s match, I just need to stay focus and maintain my mental and physical condition,” said Ginting.
Backed by loud noise from the crowd, another Indonesian player Jonathan Christie was dominant to outlast Wang Wing Ki of Hong Kong 21-11, 21-18.
“Our supporters made Wong nervous. He was having problems making some shots since the beginning, which gave me some easy points,” said Christie.
Christie will take on Kenta Nishimoto of Japan in the semi-final.
In women’s singles, both Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu of India have ensured India atleast a bronze medal by making the semi-finals. It is the first time in 36 years that India will be getting an individual badminton medal at the continental games since the late Syed Modi’s gold in 1982.
Nehwal will take on World No. 1 Tai Tzu Ying of Taiwan on Monday while Sindhu will battle Akane Yamaguchi of Japan for a spot in the final.
