Jakarta: World No.1 women’s singles player Tai Tzu Ying of Taiwan finally able to add a major title to her young badminton career by lifting the 2018 Asian Games women’s singles gold on Tuesday.
Tai, who slowly climbed to the top of World rankings after Rio Olympics, didn’t participate in the 2017 World Championships, instead, she decided to play at the 2017 Universiade that was held in Taipei. And this year, she was upset by He Bingjiao of China in the quarter-finals of the World Championships.
The Taiwanese’s success was also a historical best for Taiwanese shuttler in the Asian Games, which also made up of the 13th gold medal for Chinese Taipei in the 2018 Asian Games.
Tai’s opponent in the final, P.V. Sindhu of India, had to settle for silver after going down in straight games 13-21, 16-21 in just 34 minutes. This was Sindhu’s fourth major disappointments in big tournaments, as she lost to Carolina Marin in the Rio Olympic final, went down to Nozomi Okuhara in last year’s World Championships final and Carolina Marin in the 2018 World Championships final.
This was also Tai’s sixth consecutive win over Sindhu.
