Kuala Lumpur: Upon his return from the Asian Games in Indonesia, the men’s singles head coach of Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) Misbun Sidek told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA2) that he has received good news from the Malaysian badminton superstar, Lee Chong Wei, who is currently undergoing treatment in Taiwan for a respiratory illness.
“I’ve sent him SMS messages, and he said he was doing well and asked me not to worry,” said Sidek.
Sidek acknowledged that the 36-year-old badminton legend would require privacy during the treatment period, and he only communicated with Lee via SMS.
The Malaysian men’s singles coach also said the Lee didn’t discuss with him about the subpar performances from Malaysian players in the Asian Games.
“Chong Wei didn’t talk about how our players performed in the Asian Games, but I believed he was clear about the whole situation,” added Sidek.
“I am sure he would like our young players to be exposed to more tournaments and they could play more effectively.”
Malaysia used to be one of the best badminton powerhouse in the world. However, it has tied its worst ever Asian Games badminton record when it returned from the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games empty-handed
Lee Chong Wei was forced to withdraw from the World Championships in Nanjing, China early this month and the ongoing Asian Games after he was confirmed to be suffering a respiratory illness, and needed at least a month to undergo treatment.
