Odense: Five-time World Champion Lin Dan crashed out of the Denmark Open on Thursday, stunned by No. 7 seed Kidambi Srikanth of India 21-18, 17-21, 16-21 in 63 minutes.
Srikanth will book a quarter-final clash with compatriot Sameer Verma on Friday.
Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen was another big name to bounce out of the men’s draw in the second round, the No. 1 seed fell in three-set 10-21, 21-12, 19-21 to his teammate Anders Antonsen in 64 minutes. Antonsen will play Huang Yuxiang in the quarter-final.
The men’s doubles No. 1 seeds Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo of Indonesia wasted no time to beat unseeded Mark Lamsfuss/Marvin Emil Seidel of Germany 21-17, 21-14 in 32 minutes to enter quarter-finals.
Gideon/Sukamuljo will meet Takuro Hoki/Yugo Kobayashi next.
Meanwhile, two Malaysian mixed doubles pairs, Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying and Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Jemie Lai have both advanced to the quarter-finals.
The No. 6 seeds Chan/Goh edged past the 2018 All England champions Yuta Watanabe/Arisa Higashino of Japan 21-18 and 21-16 while Goh/Lai closed out their comprehensive second-round win over Lu Kai/Chen Lu of China 21-16 and 21-7.
Chan/Goh will move on to face Seo Seung Jae/Chae Yujung of Korea next while Goh/Lai are preparing to go up against Dechapol Puavaranukroh/Sapsiree Taerattanachai of Thailand.
Women’s singles No. 1 seed Tai Tzu Ying from Taiwan also made it out of the second round with a stellar performance against Busanan Ongbamrungphan of Thailand to get a chance to take on No. 6 seed Chen Yufei of China on Friday.
