Man Wei Chong/Tee Kai Wun Beat Olympic Champs Lee Yang/Wang Chi-Lin to Clinch Taipei Open

Taipei: Man Wei Chong/Tee Kai Wun of Malaysia pulled off a huge upset and the biggest win of their career as they came back from 12-15, 13-16 in the decider to stun Taiwan’s Tokyo Olympic champions Lee Yang/Wang Chi-Lin in the Taipei Open final.

The World No. 36 Man/Tee needed 54 minutes to eventually outlasted World No. 4 Lee/Wang 21-18, 11-21, 21-18 in front of Taiwanese fans and won their second title of the season on Sunday.

Prior to the Taipei Open, Man/Tee had previously won the 2022 Syed Modi India International on Jan 23, 2022.

“We are happy to win the title, and we learned a lot from the match. No matter who our opponents are, we always play our best,” said Tee.

“When we were trailing by a big margin in the second game, or when we fell behind in the decider, we didn’t think too much about our mistakes. We always communicate and encourage each other and maintain a good attitude to try to score the next point,” added Tee.

Despite the disappointment in men’s doubles, Taiwan’s World No. 4 men’s singles Chou Tien Chen fended off the feisty and last week’s Singapore Open runner-up World No. 38 Kodai Naraoka of Japan 14-21, 21-10, 21-6 to keep the Taipei Open title on his home turf.

With the loud cheer from the home crowd, Taiwan’s World No. 2 women’s singles Tai Tzu Ying needed only 37 minutes to power through World No. 35 Saena Kawakami of Japan 21-17, 21-16 to clinch her third title of the season.

Meanwhile, Ng Tsz Yau of Hong Kong became the biggest winner at the 2022 Taipei Open as she won both the mixed doubles and women’s titles on Sunday.

Ng Tsz Yau and Reginald Lee Chun Hei eased past Ruttanapak Oupthong/Chasinee Korepap of Thailand 21-8, 21-9 in the mixed doubles final while Ng and Tsang Hiu Yan overcame Rui Hirokami/Yuna Kato of Japan 21-15, 18-21, 21-19 for the women’s doubles crown.
