New Delhi: Indian’s number two women’s singles P.V. Sindhu wanted to close the gap between her and the reigning Australian Open champion Saina Nehwal with a strong performance in upcoming Commonwealth Games.
Saina Nehwal who won women’s singles gold at the 2010 Commonwealth Games also won bronze medal in the 2012 Olympics.
“Saina is no doubt a good, experienced player. But I hope I can be more successful than her.” Sindhu said.
“I was happy when I won bronze medal at the world championships last year. However, I am hoping I can do better this year. I am going to give my 100% in upcoming tournaments such as Commonwealth Games, World Championships and Asian Games,” said the confident Sindhu.
Sindhu and Nehwal are currently training under former world No 5 Pullela Gopichand.
“There used to be just my coach and Prakash Padukone (former World No 1, who became the first Indian to win bronze medal at the World Championship in 1983). But now there are many young players beginning to join the sport.”
Sindhu also credited last year’s Indian Badminton League (IBL) to help made badminton the fastest growing sport in India, which is second only to cricket in terms of participation.
