Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s world number one badminton player Lee Chong Wei has been ruled out of this month’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow because of a thigh injury.
On Friday, Chong Wei announced that he would not seek his third men’s singles gold medal at Glasgow Commonwealth Games from July 23-Aug 3 after aggravating his thigh injury during a training session and is currently receiving treatment at the National Sports Institute (NSI).
The two-time defending Commonwealth Games champion, first injured his thigh during Thomas Cup Finals in Delhi in May.
Chong Wei posted the announcement on his Facebook last night, he stated “I’m pulling out of the Commonwealth Games because of thigh injury. I will be going to the hospital tomorrow (today) to get an injection for the injury.”
With Chong Wei out, Malaysia will choose his replacement from one of these players – Liew Daren, Goh Soon Huat or Iskandar Zulkarnian Zainuddin. Another men’s singles Chong Wei Feng will be Malaysia’s hope of defending the gold medal for Malaysia. But Wei Feng will have to fend off challenges from Indian shuttlers such as K. Srikanth and P. Kashyap.
Other members in Malaysia squad to Glasgow are Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong, Chan Peng Soon, Lai Pei Jing, Tee Jing Yi and Lim Yin Loo.
Malaysia won four badminton gold medals out of a possible six at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
With this injury, it’s not sure if Lee Chong Wei could recover on time for the World Championships in Copenhagen from Aug 15-20.
The 2014 Commonwealth Games begin on Wednesday, 23 July.
