Lee Chong Wei to miss Glasgow Commonwealth Games

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s world number one badminton player Lee Chong Wei has been ruled out of this month’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow because of a thigh injury.Chong Wei, we would like to wish you a speedy recovery!

On Friday, Chong Wei announced that he would not seek his third men’s singles gold medal at Glasgow Commonwealth Games from July 23-Aug 3 after aggravating his thigh injury during a training session and is currently receiving treatment at the National Sports Institute (NSI).

Jungle excursion to lift shuttler’s morale (pic)

KUALA LUMPUR: A big scale motivation camp for the badminton players will be held at Taman Negara in Pahang from March 12-15.

It is aimed at uniting and inspiring the team in preparation for the four major tournaments this year – Thomas Cup Finals (May), Commonwealth Games in Glasgow (July), World Championships in Copenhagen (August) and the Asian Games in Incheon (September).

The camp will be held just days after the All-England (from March 4-9) so that all the shuttlers, including Olympic Games silver medallists Lee Chong Wei, can take part. The national badminton players will attend a motivation camp in Taman Negara, Pahang from March 12-15.

Independent players are expected to join the motivation camp – only if they are successful in a selection trial soon.

On Thursday, all the national coaches had a meeting with the National Sports Institute (NSI) team to discuss about the camp and they came out with several proposals.

Vivian aims for new milestones in Year of the Horse (pic)

KUALA LUMPUR: Chinese New Year is the time for family reunions, angpow packets and mandarin oranges.

Although doubles shuttler Vivian Hoo will be taking a break to enjoy the celebration with family and friends, she is determined that the Year of the Horse will be the one where she and partner Woon Khe Wei achieve new milestones in their three-year partnership.

Winning a SEA Games gold medal last year was an awesome feat for Vivian but she is not one to rest on her laurels.Vivian Hoo (centre) with her grandmother, 'coach' Lim Ah How, and the rest of the her family members on the eve of Chinese New Year. They are all wearing football jerseys custom-made by her uncle for the 'Home United' team.

“Winning the SEA Games gold (in Myanmar in December) will always be special but that is in the past. I want to win something bigger and better than a SEA Games gold medal this year,” said the lanky 23-year-old.
