Palembang: On Sunday, fifth seed H.S. Prannoy who finished runners-up at the USD 50,000 Vietnam Grand Prix in Hochiminh City last week, spoiled Indonesia’s clean sweep of the Indonesian Masters GPG titles by winning the men’s singles crown.
Prannoy needed only straight sets to edge out the qualifier Firman Abdul Kholik of Indonesia 21-11 22-20 in 42 minutes.
The 22-year-old Prannoy, who had beaten Daren Liew of Malaysia in the semi-final, got off the first set with an early 6-2 lead to eventually clinch the first set in 16 minutes.
Roared on by the home crowd, Firman Abdul Kholik quickly regained his composure at the second set. He was leading the Indian at 5-3, 9-7, 12-9 and managed to storm back from 17-20 down to level the score at 20-20. But his inexperience resulted in the next two crucial mistakes that allowed Prannoy to close out the game at 22-20, and to finally win his first tournament title of his career.
