Bangkok: 16-year-old Goh Jin Wei of Malaysia wowed Thailand again with another sizzling performance when she dashed past compatriot Ho Yen Mei 21-17, 21-13 in the Thailand Open quarter-finals that was held at Nimibutr Stadium in Bangkok on Friday.
The World junior champion Goh Jin Wei will play Busanan Ongbamrungphan of Thailand on Saturday before she can seal her berth in the Thailand Open final. The No. 3 seed Ongbamrungphan was made to work before beating Singapore’s Liang Xiaoyu 20-22, 21-13 and 21-12 in 63 minutes in the quarter-finals.
Malaysia’s mixed doubles pair of Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing also reached the Thailand semi-finals after coming through a draining quarter-final against Liao Min Chun/Chen Hsiao Huan of Taiwan, winning 21-15, 19-21, 21-11 in 52 minutes.
Tan/Lai will play No. 2 seeds Puavaranukroh Dechapol/Sapsiree Taerattanachai in the next round.
Independent men’s doubles pair of Malaysia, Lim Khim Wah/Ong Jian Guo fought hard to advance to the final four by shocking the No. 3 seeds Bodin Isara/Nipitphon Phuangphuapet of Thailand with 21-15, 17-21 and 21-14. No. 2 seeds Berry Angriawan/Rian Agung Saputro are awaiting Lim/Ong in the final four.
Malaysia’s challenge in the men’s singles has fizzled out after Daren Liew lost to Lee Cheuk Yiu of Hong Kong 12-21, 21-17, 15-21.
