Glasgow: Defending champions Malaysia reached the Commonwealth Games badminton mixed team final on Sunday but only after an epic 3-2 victory in the best of five rubbers semi-final against Singapore.

Mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon/Lai Pei Jing had to come from behind to scrap past Danny Chrisnanta/Vanessa Neo 17-21, 21-12, 21-14 to clinch the winning point in a three set thriller that kept the fans on the edge of their seats. Improving Peng Soon-Pei Jing eyes a run at Commonwealth Games

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s mixed doubles specialist Chan Peng Soon believed he and Pei Jing got a shot at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games which will be held from July 23-Aug 3. It’s been a tough year for the duo, who has yet to win any international title since they started playing together.

Chan Peng Soon concerns about lack of chemistry

Kuala Lumpur: Mixed doubles specialist Chan Peng Soon said it is hard to produce good results if he and his partner, Lai Pei Jing don’t have the right chemistry to get it done.

BAM decided to pair 21-year-old Pei Jing with Peng Soon in Commonwealth Games squad after his longtime partner Goh Liu Ying underwent surgery on her knees last month. Koo Kien Keat- Chin Eei Hui defeated Nathan Robertson and Jenny Wallwork of England 22-20, 21-12 to win the mixed doubles gold in the 2010 New Delhi Commonwelath Games.

Lai Pei Jing will play in Commonwealth Games

Kuala Lumpur: BAM has decided to pair up Chan Peng Soon and Lai Pei Jing in the mixed doubles event for the XX Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, over 11 days of competition from 23 July to 3 August 2014.

The decision was made due to Chan Peng Soon’s longtime partner, Goh Liu Ying has decided to undergo a career saving knee surgery on May 20th this year. Liu Ying, who forms the World No 11 pair with Peng Soon, will take at least six months to return to training but the recovery could take longer if there are other complications.

Chan Peng Soon is open to playing men’s doubles

When the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) named Peng Soon as the sixth doubles player for the Thomas Cup squad last week, the Malaysian team was excited about Peng Soon’s presence on the team.

BAM confirms Soon Huat, Peng Soon for Thomas Cup

PETALING JAYA: On Saturday, BAM announced that Soon Huat will join Lee Chong Wei, Chong Wei Feng and Liew Daren as fourth singles for the Thomas Cup Finals in New Delhi from May 18-25. The announcement ended speculations that Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) would include Misbun Ramdan Misbun as the fourth singles player because he is more aggressive and has won five international tournaments so far. Chong Wei, Peng Soon-Liu Ying are in the second round of Singapore Open

Singapore: World No. 1 Datuk Lee Chong Wei got off to a perfect start in the Singapore Open as he beat the China-born Wei Nan of Hong Kong, 21-17, 21-15 in 40 minutes.

With world No. 2 Chen Long opting to skip the meet and several top players withdrew from the tournament, Lee Chong Wei has a very high chance of bagging Singapore Open as his fourth title of the year. The last time Chong Wei played in Singapore Open was six years ago, and he won the men’s singles title that year. He will play China’s Chen Yuekun in the second round.

Goh Liu Ying-Chan Peng Soon reunited in Singapore Open

Singapore: Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying were split up 2 months ago when Goh was planning to undergo knee surgery. However, after few weeks of consultations with the medical team, instead of going for knee surgery, Goh LiuYing changed her mind and opted for aprogramme with the National Sports Institute (NSI) to strengthen her injury-prone knees. The duo will resume their partnership in Singapore Open which begins on Wednesday.

This year, the pair only played at the Malaysian Open in January where they lost in the second round to Indonesia’s Praveen Jordan-Debby Susanto.

SURGERY: Coach wants her to decide soon or risk missing Commonwealth Games

GOH Liu Ying's goal is to win the mixed doubles gold in the Commonwealth Games with Chan Peng Soon but first she has to prove she is fit enough to compete in the event in Glasgow in July.

The injuries to both her knees are serious but she is not keen to go for surgery, and this has forced mixed doubles coach Jeremy Gan to pair off Peng Soon with Lai Pei Jing with the Commonwealth Games in mind.

Peng Soon-Pei Jing will compete in the German Open on Feb 25-March 2 and the All England on March 4-9 and Jeremy wants the pair to also compete in the Malaysia Open grand prix gold on March 25-30, the India Open and the Singapore Open in April.

Pei Jing to focus on partnership with Peng Soon for now (pic)

KUALA LUMPUR: It does not matter whether it is a short or long term stint. Mixed doubles shuttler Lai Pei Jing is determined to cherish her new partnership with Chan Peng Soon for as long as it lasts.

The 21-year-old Pei Jing is pairing up with Peng Soon because the latter’s usual partner Goh Liu Ying had decided to go for a knee surgery. Liu Ying was expected to be out of action for at least six months.

Pei Jing and Peng Soon have been named for three tournaments in Europe – the Austrian Open from Feb 19-22, German Open from Feb 25-March 2, and the All-England from March 4-9.

This week, however, Liu Ying had a change of heart, deciding to postpone her plan to go under the knife. She intends to hang on until the badminton competition at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland from July 21-Aug 4.
