SURGERY: Coach wants her to decide soon or risk missing Commonwealth Games

GOH Liu Ying's goal  is to win the mixed doubles gold in the Commonwealth Games with Chan Peng Soon but first she has to prove she is fit enough to compete in the event in Glasgow in July.

The injuries to both her knees are serious but she is not keen to go for surgery, and this has forced mixed doubles coach Jeremy Gan to pair off Peng Soon with Lai Pei Jing with the Commonwealth Games in mind.Mixed doubles player Goh Liu Ying has continued competing while regularly attending physiotherapy. Peng Soon-Pei Jing will compete in the German Open on Feb 25-March 2 and the All England on March 4-9 and Jeremy wants the pair to also compete in the Malaysia Open grand prix gold on March 25-30, the India Open and the Singapore Open in April.

Singapore Open brought forward to April

KUALA LUMPUR: The Singapore Open has been brought forward due to a hectic season in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) calendar this year.

Instead of June, the fifth leg of the Superseries will be held from April 8-13 and it will coincide with the World Junior Championships, which will be hosted in Alor Setar from April 7-18. 

The Singapore dates had to be moved because some of the players will be involved in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow from July 21-Aug 4 and it will be followed by the World Championships from Aug 25-31.

There’s no ‘I’ in team for badminton squad

KUALA LUMPUR: National singles coach Rashid Sidek wants to have a team-building camp to prepare the national shuttlers for this year’s three major team events.

The three team events are the Thomas-Uber Cup Finals in New Delhi from May 18-25, Commonwealth Games in Glasgow from July 21-Aug 4 and Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, from Sept 28-Oct 5.

At the Commonwealth Games, there are medals for the mixed team event while the men and women will contest in their respective team events in the Asiad.

Rashid said he had made a proposal to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) management.

“If all goes well, the camp should take off next month. This is a year full of team events and we want to get a head start. Once we get the green light, we will decide on the venue,” added Rashid.
