Misbun Ramdan vs. Soon Huat for final spot in Malaysia’s Thomas Cup squad

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Malaysia national champion Misbun Ramdan Misbun is one game away to be eligible to play in the Thomas Cup Finals, when his first opponent Zulfadli Zulkiffli failed to show up for the second selection trial at the Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara on Monday.Misbun Ramdan hopes to continue his family legacy where his father Misbun Sidek (right), and all his uncles had played for Malaysia's Thomas Cup squad during the 80's and 90's.

Ramdan will take on Goh Soon Huat on Tuesday and the winner will be the fourth member of the singles squad to the Thomas Cup Finals in New Delhi from May 18-25, together with Lee Chong Wei, Chong Wei Feng and Liew Daren. KUALA LUMPUR: Goh Soon Huat – the back-up shuttler from Malaysia will be part of the Malaysia Thomas cup team after beating

Tan Chun Seang (former BAM player) 21-14, 21-13 in the three-day selections trials at the Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara on Friday. Goh Soon Huat finished top in Thomas Cup Trial

Misbun Ramdan Misbun and former world junior champion Zulfadli Zulkiffli pulled out of the trials due to personal health reasons.

During the trial, Soon Huat showed his fighting spirit and steely determination, and he is likely to be join the Thomas Cup team as the fourth men’s singles player.

Misbun Ramdan Misbun is fighting to fill the vacant singles slot for Malaysia’s Thomas Cup squad (pic)

Misbun Ramdan Misbun had asked for a two-day grace period for the Thomas Cup Finals selection trial  as he had just arrived from Romania on Tuesday night after winning his first international title this year – at the Romanian International on Sunday. It was his fifth international crown since leaving BAM to become an independent player in January last year.Ramdan will play in the Thomas Cup Finals selection trial on Friday.

National back-up shuttlers in danger of being booted out (pic)

KUALA LUMPUR: Some of the back-up shuttlers are in danger of being booted out of the national badminton team.

 
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) will be conducting an open selection trials at the Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara from Jan 20-24 and all the states have been asked to send their best players to challenge the back-up shuttlers.
 
Talent search programme chief David Wee said the trials would be closely monitored by the national coaches.
 
“We are trying out this open selection trials for the first time. It is a transparent way of selecting the players for the national team and we hope that the best will get in. If a state player can beat the national back-up player, he or she will be invited to join the national team and the back-up player will be dropped,” said David.
