Chinese rule the roost at All-England event

BIRMINGHAM, England (Reuters) – China maintained their dominance of the All-England Badminton Championships on Saturday although Lee Chong Wei stole most of the attention at the National Indoor Arena.

The Malaysian raced into a 5-0 lead in the first game of his men's singles semi-final before Korean Son Wan Ho rallied to take it 21-14.

Olympic silver medallist Wei then hit back to claim the next two games 21-19 21-15 to secure his place in the final.

He next faces title holder Chen Long in a repeat of last year's final after he disposed of fellow Chinese Wang Zhengmong 21-17 21-14.

Birmingham to host All England Open Badminton Championships until 2021 (pic)

February 26 – The National Indoor Arena (NIA) in Birmingham will host the All England Open Badminton Championships until 2021, Badminton England announced today.

The event, which attracts the world's best players from China, India, Malaysia, the rest of Asia and mainland Europe, will take place at the 12,700-capacity venue – which is undergoing a £26 million ($43 million/€32 million) redevelopment – after it won the hosting rights through a competitive tender and partnership process.The NIA in Birmingham will host the All England Open Badminton Championships until 2021 ©Badminton England

"We are delighted to announce that the NIA will play host to the Yonex All England," Adrian Christy, chief executive of Badminton England, said.

"We have held the Championships in Birmingham since 1994 and the NIA is much loved by the world's best players and fans alike.

"We are excited at what the redevelopment of the NIA will mean to our event.
