UK Sport cut badminton funding for Tokyo 2020

London: Although Britons Marcus Ellis and Chris Langridge won bronze medal in the men’s doubles event in Rio Olympics this summer, Badminton became one of five sports to lose all UK Sport funding for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

UK sports have invested £5.74m in the last Olympic cycle in badminton, and Marcus Ellis and Chris Langridge were able to live up to expectation by taking home the bronze in men’s doubles. Gail Emms’ badminton comeback gets 
off to winning start (pic)

Gail Emms got her badminton ‘comeback’ off to a winning start at the English National Badminton Championships in Milton Keynes today.

The 36-year-old 2004 Olympic silver medallist and former world, European and Commonwealth champion teamed up with last year’s mixed doubles runner-up Marcus Ellis to defeat Ben Stawski and Alex Langley in their second-round contest after an opening bye.Gail Emms

But their performance was not without a minor hiccup at the start. Ellis and Emms let slip the opening game as she looked a little rusty before settling down and turning things round 13-21 21-10 21-6.

Emms, who won this mixed doubles title six times with three different partners before retiring after the 2008 Olympics, will now face 2012 champions and the world’s fifth-ranked pair in Chris and Gabby Adcock when the tournament moves to the arena:stadiumMK tomorrow for the quarter and semi-final stages.

Chauncy student Matthew Widdicombe to play in National Badminton event

CHAUNCY pupil Matthew Widdicombe is one of six Hertfordshire players including ex-Olympian Gail Emms who will be competing in the Senior Nationals Badminton Championship.

The event starts on Friday February 7 and takes place at two different venues in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire.TOP PLAYER: Matthew Widdicombe

It will be at the National Badminton Centre on Friday and the Stadium MK on Saturday and Sunday.

It is the first time Widdicombe is competing at the senior nationals.
