Lai Pei Jing will play in Commonwealth Games

Kuala Lumpur: BAM has decided to pair up Chan Peng Soon and Lai Pei Jing in the mixed doubles event for the XX Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, over 11 days of competition from 23 July to 3 August 2014.

The decision was made due to Chan Peng Soon’s longtime partner, Goh Liu Ying has decided to undergo a career saving knee surgery on May 20th this year. Liu Ying, who forms the World No 11 pair with Peng Soon, will take at least six months to return to training but the recovery could take longer if there are other complications.

BIRMINGHAM: It’s only been two tournaments but Chan Peng Soon is already singing the praises of new partner Lai Pei Jing.

The mixed doubles pair made their debut at the Austrian International Challenge last month and enjoyed a fine run to the final before losing to Poland’s Robert Mateusiak-Agnieszka Wotjkowska.

Last week, the pair’s weaknesses were cruelly exposed by South Korea’s Ko Sung-hyun-Kim Ha-na in the German Open as they lost in the first round.

But Peng Soon, who turns 26 next month, is still impressed with Pei Jing, who is five years his junior, especially with her diligence.

“We’ve had a decent start, one final and one first round defeat … that was because our partnership is still very new,” said Peng Soon.

Peng Soon-Pei Jing fall in Austria final (pic)

PETALING JAYA: Mixed doubles shuttlers Chan Peng Soon-Lai Pei Jing came close to a perfect start in their partnership at the Austrian International Challenge in Vienna.

Playing in their first international competition together, Peng Soon-Pei Jing marched all the way to the final on Saturday. Unfortunately, the Malaysians lost 15-21, 21-15, 16-21 to the experienced Polish pair of Robert Mateusiak-Agnieszka Wojtokowska. Earlier in the semi-finals, Peng Soon-Pei Jing defeated Taiwan’s Chen Hung-ling-Wu Ti-jung 21-16, 21-16.

Pei Jing previously partnered Tan Aik Quan and they were ranked as high as No.15 in the world. As for Peng Soon, his regular partner Goh Liu Ying is taking time out due to a knee injury.

Pei Jing was pleased they managed to reach the final in their first outing.

Ultimatum to Liu Ying (pic)

SURGERY: Coach wants her to decide soon or risk missing Commonwealth Games

GOH Liu Ying's goal is to win the mixed doubles gold in the Commonwealth Games with Chan Peng Soon but first she has to prove she is fit enough to compete in the event in Glasgow in July.

The injuries to both her knees are serious but she is not keen to go for surgery, and this has forced mixed doubles coach Jeremy Gan to pair off Peng Soon with Lai Pei Jing with the Commonwealth Games in mind.

Peng Soon-Pei Jing will compete in the German Open on Feb 25-March 2 and the All England on March 4-9 and Jeremy wants the pair to also compete in the Malaysia Open grand prix gold on March 25-30, the India Open and the Singapore Open in April.

Pei Jing to focus on partnership with Peng Soon for now (pic)

KUALA LUMPUR: It does not matter whether it is a short or long term stint. Mixed doubles shuttler Lai Pei Jing is determined to cherish her new partnership with Chan Peng Soon for as long as it lasts.

The 21-year-old Pei Jing is pairing up with Peng Soon because the latter’s usual partner Goh Liu Ying had decided to go for a knee surgery. Liu Ying was expected to be out of action for at least six months.

Pei Jing and Peng Soon have been named for three tournaments in Europe – the Austrian Open from Feb 19-22, German Open from Feb 25-March 2, and the All-England from March 4-9.

This week, however, Liu Ying had a change of heart, deciding to postpone her plan to go under the knife. She intends to hang on until the badminton competition at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland from July 21-Aug 4.

Pei Jing chosen as Peng Soon’s new partner (pic)

PETALING JAYA: National mixed doubles coach Jeremy Gan has decided to pair up Chan Peng Soon and Lai Pei Jing as he believes the pair have what it takes to make an impact.

Peng Soon is currently ranked sixth in the world with Goh Liu Ying but that partnership has been put on hold following the latter’s decision to undergo knee surgery. She is expected to be out of action for at least six months.

The 21-year-old Pei Jing meanwhile has been paired with Tan Aik Quan for the past three years and the duo were ranked as high as No. 15 in the world last May.
