Club badminton players coming to the fore

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia endured a horrendous outing at the recent Asian Junior Badminton Championships in Taiwan.

Only girls’ singles shuttler S. Kisona made the quarter-finals while the rest crashed out in the early rounds.

While the Badminton Association of Malaysia’s (BAM) juniors failed miserably, there was some joy for the club-based juniors.

On Sunday, Yeoh Seng Zoe-Chong Chun Quan, who are attached with the Looi Academy, made a breakthrough of sorts by winning the boys’ doubles title in the Uganda International.

Kisona only one left in Asian Juniors （pic）

PETALING JAYA: S. Kisona is the only Malaysian shuttler left standing in the individual event of the Asian Junior Championships in Taiwan.

On a day the other national shuttlers fell like tenpins, Kisona stormed her way into the girls’ singles quarter-finals.

She began the day with a gutsy performance, beating China’s Wang Xinyuan 21-13, 20-22, 21-14 in a tough 52-minute second round match.

In the third round, Kisona downed India’s Gadde Ruthvika Shivani 21-11, 22-20 to set up a quarter-final clash against second-seeded Busanan Ongbumrungpan of Thailand. S. Kisona in a file photo. She will meet second-seeded Busanan Ongbumrungpan of Thailand in the quarter-finals of the Asian Junior Championships.

Lee Ying Ying was the only other national girls’ singles shuttler to make it past the second round. She beat Chang Yu-chen of Taiwan 21-16, 21-14 in the second round but lost to Qin Jinjing of China 21-8, 21-6 in the third round.
