Men’s doubles the weakest link for Malaysia Thomas Cup team
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia badminton has traditionally been known to produce and to nurture top men’s doubles. Started with Tan Aik Huang/Yew Cheng Hoe in the 60’s, Ng Boon Bee/Punch Gunalan in the 70’s, Razif Sidek/Jalani Sidek in the 80’s, Cheah Soon-Kit/Soo Beng Kiang, Cheah Soon-Kit/Yap Kim Hock, 
Lee Wan Wah/Chong Tan Fook in the 90’s, and Chew Chong Eng/Chan Chong Ming, Koo Kien Keat/ Tan Boon Heong in the 2000’s. Although some of these pairs may not always be the dominant power in the badminton world, but, men’s doubles has always been huge factor to secure points for Malaysia’s Thomas Cup team.

Misbun rejected Malaysia’s offer to become badminton supremo (pic)
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Misbun Sidek turned down The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM)’s offer to be the Chief Director for its national team due to personal reasons. 
BAM was forced to switch to Plan B, which they appointed Rashid Sidek, as the singles chief coach on Thursday and will name the chief for doubles soon. BAM president Tan Sri Tengku Mahaleel Tengku Ariff said they have not yet decided if Kim Hock will be their pick to head the doubles department. “We will now go back to our Plan B and appoint two chief coaches – one in the singles and one in the doubles.”

Yap Kim Hock Might be Back to BAM (pic)
KUALA LUMPUR: Yap Kim Hock (former men’s doubles Olympic Games silver medallist) could become the doubles national coach with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) again.
President Tan Sri Tengku Mahaleel Tengku Ariff, secretary Ng Chin Chai and general manager Kenny Goh interviewed him on Friday. They will let Kim Hock know about their decision on March 20. The comittee will also decides what will happen to Tan Kim Her, the existing national coach; and whether Datuk Misbun Sidek will accept the position of the coaching director for BAM.

HIRING OF LOCAL COACHES: Ex-internationals applaud faith shown by BAM
FORMER internationals Kwan Yoke Meng and Yap Kim Hock welcomed the BA of Malaysia's (BAM) move to give local coaches the chance to plot the course of the national team after the attempt to hire Morten Frost Hansen as the director of coaching has fallen short.
BAM has no choice but to shift attention to local candidates after Frost had apparently asked for a monthly salary of RM100,000, and the association is set to initiate a move to bring Misbun Sidek back as the supremo of the national team.
Yoke Meng, who served as the national singles coach in the 1990s, supported the move to give local coaches the opportunity but he also felt that it would be good to get a person who can can manage the team while the coaches should be solely allowed to focus on improving the performance of the players.

BUKIT JALIL: Former Olympic Games silver medallist Yap Kim Hock wants a chance to become the national coach once again – to find a remedy for the ailing men’s doubles department.
Kim Hock, who was chief coach from 2004-2008, said on Thursday that he had submitted an official job application letter to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) last week and is awaiting a reply.
The 43-year-old Kim Hock’s genuine interest to revive the fortunes of Malaysia’s doubles pairs could not have been more timely, judging by their poor outing in the ongoing Maybank Malaysian Open at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil.
