National Sports Council (NSC) of Malaysia only expects Malaysia to win two gold medals in badminton events at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
However, Rashid Sidek, the national singles coach holds a different opinion that he thinks Malaysia shuttlers could win more.
“I think we can win more than two gold medals, we are hoping to win at least four golds like we did over each of the past two Commonwealth games.”
“Of course, we are going to face some challenges from England, India, and Singapore,” added Rashid.
Each country is limited to sending five men and five women for the badminton event. The Malaysia men’s badminton team will feature Lee Chong Wei, Chong Wei Feng, Tan Wee Kiong-Goh V Shem and the women’s team will consist of Tee Jing Yi, Woon Khe Wei-Vivian Hoo and Lim Yin Loo.
Malaysia has high chances of winning the men’s singles gold through Lee Chong Wei, men’s doubles through scratch pair Tan Wee Kiong-Goh V Shem, and the mixed team event if Tee Jing Yi, Woon Khe Wei-Vivian Hoo could step up to the plate to win their games for Malaysia.
“If Jing Yi can play like how she played at the Uber Cup last month, we can count on her to deliver one point,” said Rashid.
“Chong Wei and Wee-Kiong-V Shem should capable of giving us two more points,” added Rashid.
Malaysia won four gold medals at the 2010 New Delhi Commonwealth games through Lee Chong Wei in men’s singles, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong in men’s doubles, Koo Kien Keat-Chin Eei Hui in mixed doubles and in the mixed team event.
