Tokyo: Lin Dan of China has once again proved his reputation as “Super Dan” after he earned a hard fought three-set battle against 21-year-old Viktor Axelsen in the Japan Open final on Sunday.
Lin Dan got off to a slow start in the first set in which he trailed 3-8 against Viktor Axelsen at one point. Lin then overcame some sloppy errors to eventually win the first set 21-19.

PETALING JAYA: Any hope of the national junior shuttlers returning home with a medal in the individual events of the Asian Junior Championships in Taiwan ended with S. Kisona’s exit.
Kisona went down tamely in the girls’ singles quarter-finals to Busanan Ongbumrungpan of Thailand 21-5, 21-10 in just 30 minutes on Friday.
With her exit, the national team have to return home empty-handed, having failed to impress in both the mixed team event and the individual events.
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian shuttlers have been handed a tough draw for the All-England badminton championships, which will be held in Birmingham from March 4-9.
According to the draw released Tuesday, world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei has a tricky first round match against Thailand’s Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk, who has a knack for rising to the occasion.
The others in top seed Chong Wei’s top half of the draw are Denmark’s Jan O Jorgensen, China’s Du Pengyu, Malaysia’s Wei Feng and Japan’s Kenichi Tago and Kento Momota.
If Chong Wei wins the opener, he will meet either Wei Feng or Marc Zwiebler of Germany before either Pengyu or Momota awaits him in the quarter-finals.

KUALA LUMPUR: Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin has given the thumbs-up on a proposal for former national coach Misbun Sidek to become the Badminton Association of Malaysia’s (BAM) national coaching director.
On Sunday, world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei had suggested that Misbun, his former coach, be named for the job based on his experience.
On Monday, Khairy said it was time for the BAM to find someone as a coaching director to strengthen the coaching and training set-up.
“Misbun is a great coach and he has proven that by producing good players, including Chong Wei. It is a good proposal but I will leave it to the BAM to find the ideal candidate,” said Khairy.

KUALA LUMPUR: Former badminton great Datuk Tan Yee Khan feels that it’s time to let men’s doubles shuttler Koo Kien Keat go.
Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong’s future as a pair is under scrutiny following their first round defeat in the Malaysian Open in January.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have put them in cold storage until a decision is made whether to keep them as a pair or split them up. The other options are to let them turn professionals or use them as sparring partners. 
Since the national team resumed training after the Chinese New Year, only Boon Heong has been back in action. Kien Keat turned up for just a day to inform the BAM management that he would be on leave after deciding to go for an eye treatment, which he underwent last Monday.

KUALA LUMPUR: National singles shuttler Chong Wei Feng is refreshed and ready to step up to the plate after a pep talk by world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei and a warm gathering among the singles players during the Chinese New Year season.
The 31-year-old Chong Wei spent some time advising and encouraging Wei Feng after the latter’s demoralising first round defeats at the Korean and Malaysian Opens last month. 
Chong Wei even hosted a special dinner for all the singles players during the Chinese New Year – treating them to good food and good fun. He even gave them gifts via a lucky draw.
Wei Feng is grateful to Chong Wei for trying lift the morale of his comrades in the men’s singles department.
“I was down after my recent defeats. The nation is looking for Chong Wei’s successor but I have failed to live up to expectations. All these put some pressure on me and, unfortunately, I could not deal with it. As a result, I did not play true to my form,” said Wei Feng.
