PASIR GUDANG: Amelia Anscelly-Soong Fie Cho was able to step up to the plate in the ongoing Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold by advancing into the quarter-finals at the Pasir Gudang Municipal Stadium after a hard-fought 21-17, 21-16 win over Chaladchalam Chayanit-Peeraya Munkitamorn of Thailand.
The duo will take on China’s rising pair, Huang Yaqiang-Yu Xiaohan, in the last eight on Friday – and they hope to be able to do well to solidify their status as second best women’s pair in Malaysia.
Amelia and Fie Cho, have known each other since they were young, and it is their close-knit friendship that brought them together on the badminton court.
“We have been playing the national team for one and a half years but I've known Fie for a very long time,” said Amelia.
“I joined BAM’s (Badminton Association of Malaysia) Academy at the age of 13. I always try to catch up with childhood friends such as Fie Cho whenever I went back to the state for short breaks."
“One and a half years ago, when Fie joined BAM, I was like, man! our dream to play badminton together for Malaysia came true.”
Their partnership got off to a great start when they won the 2013 Iran International.
Fie Cho said: "we are showing steady progress, but we need to work harder so that we can make a major breakthroughs."
“We were so close in the Vietnam GP last year. We can work so well together and I believe we have a lot of room for improvement,” added Fie Cho, who hopes the pair can go as far as they can in the home tournament.
Another Malaysian pair, Lim Yin Loo-Lee Meng Yean will take on third seeds Shinta Mulia Sari-Yao Lei of Singapore in the women’s doubles quarter-finals.
