Odense: Olympic women’s doubles champions and No. 1 seeds Misaki Matsutomo/Ayaka Takahashi faced the biggest challenge of their tourney at Denmark Open on Sunday when they needed 68 minutes to battle back from a set down to beat No. 2 seeds Jung Kyung Eun and Shin Seung Chan of South Korea 19-21, 21-11, 21-16 to win the Denmark Open women’s doubles title.
The 19-year-old and World No. 10 Akane Yamaguchi of Japan showed fantastic court covering by running around the court chasing No. 5 seeds Tai Tzu Ying’s shots in the women’s final on Sunday. Yamaguchi’s capability of covering every inch of the court with her speed and a relentless attitude, finally wore Tai down. Yamaguchi responded to her opponent’s frustration in the decider with exceptional shot making to eventually win the women’s doubles final 19-21, 21-14, 21-12 in 58 minutes.
Joachim Fischer Nielsen and Christinna Pedersen who defeated Xu Chen/Ma Jin of China in the 2011 Denmark Open, secured their second Denmark Open title on Sunday as the Denmark’s No. 5 seeds mixed doubles pair gave the home crowd something to cheer about when they saw off No. 8 seeds Zheng Siwei/Chen Qingchen of China to lift the mixed doubles crown.
