Copenhagen: Top seed Lee Chong Wei cruised into the quarter-finals of BWF World Championships after defeating Ireland’s Scott Evans straight games 21-11, 21-12 in 36 minutes.Lee Chong Wei signs autograph at Copenhagen

 

Chong Wei barely broke a sweat as he fought vigorously to open up an 11-5 lead in the opening set. After the interval, it’s been a master class of variety and fantastic shots from the world number one to take the first set with 21-11.

 

For a brief moment, the resilient Scott Evans managed to put up a fight leading 5-2 at the beginning of second set. But Chong Wei stormed back by grabbing eleven straight points to take the lead back at 13-5 and to seal the game with 21-12.

 

In the last eight encounter, Chong Wei faces China’s Wang Zhengming. The sixth seed Wang knocked off Wei Nan of Hong Kong 21-15 21-18 on Thursday.

 

There was more good news in the men’s doubles when Hoon Thien How/Tan Wee Kiong edged their Japanese opponents in breath taking match that went down to the wire.

 

The Malaysian duo survived a scare by outlasting Takeshi Kamura/Keigo Sonoda 19-21, 21-17, 21-19. They will take on Korea’s Ko Sung-hyun-Shin Baek-cheol next.
