East Java: Soo Teck Zhi marched into semi-finals at Indonesia International Challenge after pulling off one of the biggest upsets yet on the men’s side on Friday. The No. 7 seed, 20-year-old Malaysian defeated No. 1 Firman Abdul Kholik of Indonesia 13-21, 21-12, 21-13 in 78 minutes. This was Soo’s second career win over Kholik after he managed to beat the Indonesian at last year’s Malaysia Kuching International Challenge. In order to book a final berth, Soo will have to get past the Athens Olympic bronze medalist Sony Dwi Kuncoro on Saturday.

Taipei: Malaysian badminton superstar Lee Chong Wei will face off in a Friday quarter-final against world No. 1 Chen Long, whom he lost to in last year’s World Championship final at Copenhagen.
In his first match on Thursday, the unseeded Lee Chong Wei produced a solid performance against tenth seed Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia by winning the first set with 21-12. While Lee trailed for most of the second set, he picked up his game when it mattered, rallying from 13-18 down to reel off the next 8 points to survive the stirring challenge from Sugiarto.

Gwangju: South Korea mixed doubles pair got off to a good start for the host country when Shin Seung-Chan and Kim Gi-jung defeated Chiang Kai-Hsin and Lu Ching-Yao of Chinese Taipei 21-14, 21-11 at Hwasun Hanium Culture Sports Center in Hwasun, South Jeolla Province, Korea, to pick up the first gold medal for Korea in the badminton individual event. Last Wednesday, South Korea won the badminton mixed team gold medal at the Universiade.
