Taipei: For a long time it seemed we would not able to see the 2003 All England champion Muhammad Hafiz Hashim to compete at the highest level of badminton anymore, proving he still had plenty of fuel in his tank, the 32-year-old Malaysian sprung two surprises on Tuesday at the Chinese Taipei Open qualifying round when he defeated compatriot Jimmy Tay Yu Lun 21-17 , 15-21, 21-7 in 50 minutes, and sparked a strong comeback to closed out a tough victory over Lin Chia Hsuan of Chinese Taipei in the second qualifying match with 18-21, 21-17, 22-20 in 55 minutes. Hafiz is set to square off with Jeon Hyeok-Jin of Korea on Wednesday. Jeon Hyeok-Jin is going to be a tough nut to crack for Hafiz, since he has proved his worth by pulling off an upset triumph over world No. 9 Son Wan Ho at last week’s 2015 Gwangju Summer Universiade men’s singles final.

Sydney: Former world No. 1 men’s pair Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong of Malaysia got their comeback campaign at the Australian Open in Sydney off to a flyer. The Malaysian duo produced straight sets 21-12, 21-19 victory over Hong Kong’s Alan Chan Yun Lung/Reginald Lee Chun Hei in their first qualifier. Koo/Tan then returned to the court at around 4.30pm Sydney time to demolish their compatriots Jagdish Singh/Roni Tan Wee Long 21-17, 21-13 in just 31 minutes to make it to the main draw that starts on Wednesday.

Kuala Lumpur: On Sunday night, Muar City BC of Purple League notched a blowout 15-6 win over Kepong BC to extend their franchise record winning streak to 9 games, thanks to strong performances from Lee Hyun Il and Mak Hee Chun/Tan Bin Shen.
Lee Hyun-Il got off to a good start, breaking Goh Soon Huat of Kepong BC 11-7, 11-5, 10-11, 11-7 to win the first men’s singles match comfortably in 39 minutes.

After a turbulent career at Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), the two ex-BAM players Mak Hee Chun/Tan Bin Shen who used to be nobodies after leaving BAM have somehow made their way to become somebodies. After winning the Sabah Open two weeks ago, Mak Hee Chun and Tan Bin Shen have every reason to smile again on Tuesday as they defeated BAM’s back-up shuttlers Tan Wee Gieen and Teo Ee Yi 21-18, 21-15 in 35 minutes to win their first ever national men’s doubles title.
