Tommy Sugiarto eases through, Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying out in Vietnam

Ho Chi Minh City: Tommy Sugiarto earned a big boost of momentum with a 21-14, 21-19 victory over unseeded compatriot Ginting Anthony on Saturday at the men’s singles semi-finals at Vietnam Open.

Sugiarto raced to 17-6 in the opening set before he eased past Anthony 21-14 to claim the first set. However, 18-year-old Ginting Anthony provided stiffer resistance in the second set, battled competitively for each and every single point to level the score at 19-19. Sugiarto held his nerve and kept his cool, reeling off the next two points to clinch the second set with 21-19. He will take on South Korean Lee Hyun-Il in the men’s final on Sunday.

Lee Hyun-il, Saena Kawakami win New Zealand Open

Auckland: Despite being 10 years older than his Chinese opponent, the 35 year old former world number one shuttler Lee Hyun-il of South Korea sent a reminder to the young gun Qiao Bin from China, that he is nowhere near close to riding quietly into the sunset when he romped to victory in the men’s singles final in just 43 minutes at the New Zealand Open on Sunday.

Auckland: Korea’s former world No. 1 men’s singles badminton star Lee Hyun-il who has come back from retirement at least three times and has not letting age slow down his games. The 35 year old Korean dominating men’s singles semi-finals at New Zealand Open, beating top seed Hsu Jen Hao 21-13, 21-6 to set up a championship clash against unseeded Qiao Bin of China in the men’s singles final on Sunday.

World No. 82 Jonatan Christie defeated Ihsan Maulana Mustofa, during a tense clash that ended 14-21, 21-11, 21-18 in Bali and lasted 64 minutes.

Muar City crush Kepong to hold top spot on Purple League

Kuala Lumpur: On Sunday night, Muar City BC of Purple League notched a blowout 15-6 win over Kepong BC to extend their franchise record winning streak to 9 games, thanks to strong performances from Lee Hyun Il and Mak Hee Chun/Tan Bin Shen.

Lee Hyun-Il got off to a good start, breaking Goh Soon Huat of Kepong BC 11-7, 11-5, 10-11, 11-7 to win the first men’s singles match comfortably in 39 minutes.

Lee Yong-Dae joins Purple League’s Muar City as a mentor

Kuala Lumpur: World number one men’s doubles player Lee Yong-Dae has joined Muar City in the role of mentor. He would not compete in Purple League, instead, he would be offering advice and sharing experience with the Muar City players.

Speaking as a mentor, Lee Yong-Dae said Muar City have to improve the quality of their games in order to stay on top of the Purple League ranking before the start of the Champions Challenge in February.

Lee Hyun-il, Nozomi Okuhara win Malaysia Masters

Kuching: After winning the Thailand International Challenge title in Bangkok last week, the 34-year-old Korean veteran Lee Hyun-il put himself on top of the podium again on Sunday when he defeated compatriot Jeon Hyeok Jin in the men’s singles final to clinch the 2015 Malaysia Masters title.

Lee who ranked 38th in the world, lost in the first set 19-21. He was showing few signs of age as he played a much faster game in second set by winning 21-13 to force a decider. Lee’s experience and immense speed came to the fore in the rubber game, knocking off his younger opponent 21-15 to take the men’s title together with prize money US$9,000.

Malaysian pairs fail to reach Malaysia Masters finals

Kuching: With one fell rather easily and another failed to come back from one set down, two Malaysian pairs of mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon/Lai Pei Jing and men’s doubles pair Tan Wee Kiong/Goh V Shem exited Malaysia Masters on Saturday and helped set another low point in Malaysian badminton.

Chan Peng Soon/Lai Pei Jing were no match for the top seeds Joachim Fischer Nilsen/Christinna Pedersen of Denmark in mixed doubles semi-final, they were shut down by the Denmark pair 10-21, 7-21 in just 32 minutes.

Kuala Lumpur: Muar City BC shot down Bangsar Hawks BC 18-3 to reclaim the top spot in the Purple League rankings on Sunday.

South Korean veteran Lee Hyun-Il of Muar City BC faced a tough opposition from Zulfadli Zulkiffli at the first men’s singles match. The experienced South Korean eventually overcame a hefty challenge from the 2014 Malaysian Champion to prevail at 11-5, 8-11, 11-7, 11-6.
